The Vortex Other Dimension Festival: Spend one day totally immersed in improvisational music that will feature master classes and workshops by leading musicians from New England and New York. This day at the Cambridge YMCA will also include athletic activities lead by trained instructors, student performances and a 3 hour concert event at night! If you only have time for one or two master classes, mix and match your time and class preference below. Learn jazz, blues, microtonal improvisation, music concrete, world music and avant-guarde improvisation, on your instrument of choice. Master classes and workshops will offer expert woodwind, brass, percussion and string instructors. Participants will be encouraged to work with their peers in newly formed groups to create music based on experimentation and spontaneity. VOD stands for Vortex Other Dimension Festival, an offshoot of the Vortex Series, a 2010 grant recipient of the Cambridge Arts Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. It is a series that embraces music in all of its forms and fosters new improvisational relationships between musicians of seemingly different backgrounds. Many of the musicians featured in the Vortex series work together for the first time and that will be the guiding factor behind this unique musical event. *All masterclasses and workshops will be hands on, geared to all instruments. For instance, if you attend a woodwind masterclass and you are a keyboard player, you will have the opportunity to participate regardless of the fact that you not a woodwind player. In each masterclass, you will lean a new perspective on improvisation from a different clinician. That's why we are doing this all day...there is so much variety and so many different perspectives.
